BLR’s new Special Report:
What to Expect from an OSHA Inspection
Many employers rank undergoing an OSHA inspection right up there with root canal or an IRS tax audit. And there’s good reason for anxiety.
OSHA, either in its federal or state plan incarnations, is an enforcement agency. It can cite you, fine you, even shut you down. And inspections can be triggered by even a single complaint, justified or not, from anyone inside or even outside your organization. What’s more, they almost always come unannounced.
The solution to this anxiety is to be prepared, and to know what’s coming, and how to react to it. Now you can, with the help of BLR’s new Special Report, What to Expect from an OSHA Inspection.
All BLR special reports are written by experts, but this one takes that expertise to a new level. Author Rick Kaletsky worked for DOL/OSHA for 20 years, serving as an assistant director in the Connecticut office. He’s knowledgeable about what goes on inside the agency and in the mind of a Compliance Safety and Health Officer (CSHO) in ways that few others can be.
The report is short, only 19 pages, but absolutely essential if you want to be ready for that knock on the door. Here’s some of what Kaletsky covers:
- The reasons for inspections and what triggers them
- Differences between unprogrammed and programmed inspections
- Your right to a warrant (and why you probably shouldn’t press it!)
- Employee rights to be part of the inspection process (Yes, they have them.)
- How to act in the opening conference
- What documentation will be required
- The danger of over-documentation (Hint: It can prove you were aware of responsibilities that you subsequently did not carry out.)
- Beneficial behaviors during the walk-around.
- Helpful strategies during the closing conference
- How to dissect a citation
- Factors in deciding whether to appeal or request an informal (settlement) conference
- What to do if offered an expedited settlement agreement
- Dealing with the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission (OSHRC)
Can you afford not to have this report? Kaletsky has something to say about that. “Your company may not be inspected for years,” he writes in the report’s introduction, “or the knock on the door may be just hours away. This is not a matter on which to gamble. Be prepared for an inspection at any time.”
You’d want this report regardless of cost. But in fact, it’s yours absolutely FREE. It’s our thank you for signing up as a charter subscriber to Safety Daily Advisor, also FREE.
