How Some Organizations Are Using Mobile Devices for Training

In last Friday’s Advisor, we provided 7 ergonomic tips for using mobile devices safely. Today, we give several examples of how companies are using mobile devices for training.

Tablet sales are on the rise, and the iPad® is leading the pack. Tech-savvy businesses have been at the forefront, incorporating tablets into everyday business functions. Now, one pizza chain is using the iPad to train employees on all sorts of tasks, from how to flip a pizza to how to keep an angry customer from flipping out.

According to www.pizzamarketplace.com, Flippin’ Pizza, in conjunction with Clave Media, developed an iPad app that features short training videos. An employee or trainee can be trained on customer service, how to make a pie, food recipes, how to handle an angry customer, and other job functions.

“Nobody wants to sit and watch an hour-long video,” Flippin’ Founder Patrick Farley said. “Managers and staff absolutely love (the new app).”

The company’s young workforce—the average age range for an employee is 16 to 24 years old—makes the iPad “the perfect tool to resonate with the staff demographic, which will result in retaining more high-quality employees,” says Curtis Clave, founder of Clave Media.

“With the new generation of workers, it is going to be necessary for other brands to follow Flippin’ Pizza’s lead and incorporate the use of modern technology to enhance four walls marketing,” Clave says.

Flippin’ isn’t the first—and certainly won’t be the last—employer to use new technology to engage employees in training programs. McDonald’s franchises in Japan use Nintendo® DSi to train employees, and more recently, the U.S. government incorporated 3D gaming technology into its Secret Service training program.

We can’t wait to see what employers will come up with once the next iPad comes out!
